We used the Art of Problem Solving online class in conjunction with the curriculum. It motivated my son that was previously not into math into excelling. :-) This curriculum is complete and I love the way the focus is on solving the problem rather than calculating answers. It is good for the gifted child that doesn't need lots of repetition.
Our son flew through Beast Academy and started Art of Problem Solving’s Pre-Algebra in 4 th grade. There is a definite shift from Beast Academy to Art of Problem Solving. The cute comic book style is gone, but in its place are educational and entertaining videos done by the CEO and founder of Art of Problem Solving, Richard Rusczyk.
Several months back Anna wrote an article titled Beast Academy and Art of Problem Solving Reviews.In that article, she touched on The Art of Problem Solving and our shift from Beast Academy. I wanted to follow up on how things have been going as we are nearing completion of Prealgebra.
Richard Rusczyk is one of the co-authors of the Art of Problem Solving textbooks, and author of Art of Problem Solving's Introduction to Algebra and Introduction to Geometry textbooks (Intermediate Algebra due to be published in early 2008). He is also one of the co-creators of the Mandelbrot Competition, and the Director of the USA.
Prealgebra prepares students for the rigors of algebra and also teaches students problem-solving techniques to prepare them for prestigious middle school math contests such as MATHCOUNTS, MOEMS, and the AMC 8. The text is written to challenge students at a much deeper level than a traditional middle school prealgebra course, and is used for.
I was recently introduced to The Art of Problem Solving, which is a series of math textbooks aimed at gifted middle and high school students, especially those who are interested in math competitions. I only looked through one of the books, Introduction to Algebra, by Richard Rusczyk, and this review will be about that text only.
